Medicinal maggots are used to treat and manage wounds in a procedure known as “maggot therapy.” Monarch Labs provides a proprietary brand of medicinal maggots known as Medicinal Maggots™.
The application of maggot therapy is quite simple and involves a three-step process:
Medicinal Maggots™ are placed in the wound at a density of 5-8 maggots per square centimeter. These are then covered with a confinement dressing, which confines the maggots to the wound area.
The active biological dressing is left on the patient for a period of 1-2 days. During this time, the maggots work to clean the wound by consuming dead tissue and secreting antimicrobial substances.
After the treatment period, the dressing and maggots are removed. They can be disposed of as other medical waste.
In the United States, Medicinal Maggots™ are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). They are considered a prescription-only medical device. Their main use is for debriding, or cleaning, chronic wounds. These include pressure ulcers, venous stasis ulcers, neuropathic foot ulcers, and non-healing traumatic or post-surgical wounds.
